"It grows but never ages" - the motto of bulgarian capital.
The Bulgarian capital Sofia is located in the Sofiisko pole, 550 m above the sea level, on the foot of Vitosha mountain.
Evidence has been found that here was a Neolithic settlement as early as 7000 years ago. Later here sprang up an ancient Thracian city, called by the Romes – Serdica. In the Rome epoch (I – IV th century AD) the town was growing as a center of the country Inner Traci. In V – VI th century, at the time of “Great Migrate of the People” there were invasions of Huns, Gothic and Barbarians. From the middle of the VI th century the town developed as an important administrative and economic center of the Byzantine empire with the name of Triaditsa. In 809 the town was included within the limits of the Bulgarian country with the name of Sredets. From the end of the XIV th century till the seventies of the XIX th century the town and the whole country were under the Ottoman rule.
After leberation , on 4th of April 1879 Sifia was proclaimed the capital of Bulgaria. At that time the city had a population of only 12 000.
Now Sofia's population is more than 1 200 000 inhabitants and occupies a territory of 1, 311 sq. km.
